Nigeria Says Morocco Gas Pipeline Feasibility Study Concluded

The feasibility study of the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline has been concluded, a senior Nigerian oil official has said.

Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation head Maikanti Baru said Monday that the pre-front end engineering design optimization study is continuing.

The pipeline agreement started in 2016 when Nigeria announced a partnership with the Moroccan government to construct a gas pipeline that will connect Nigeria, Morocco and other African countries to Europe. The agreement was reached during the visit of Moroccan King Mohammed VI to Nigeria in December of that year.

Set to run for 5,660 kilometers, the pipeline will see Nigeria provide gas to countries in West Africa as well as Morocco and Europe.

The pipeline will help in the electrification and industrialization of these countries, and will also meet European heating needs, the NNPC said.

t is also expected to reduce gas flaring in Nigeria, Africa's biggest crude-oil exporter.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the second Nigerian International Petroleum Summit in Abuja on Monday, Mr. Baru said the pipeline will traverse at least 15 West African countries, with intake points in the each one, before connecting with the existing Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline in northern Morocco.

He said African countries must collaborate in oil-and-gas infrastructure to remain competitive on the global stage.
